A truth that is often stated, but not always believed is that God is truly great. What is interesting about faith, is that it requires faith. Therefore, when we truly exercise faith and trust a truly amazing God… then only the best will be experienced.
1 John 1:9 says, “But if we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous, forgiving our sins and cleansing us from all unrighteousness.” (NET). This verse should be on the tip of every person’s tongue that knows and follows Christ. You might ask why or even what makes this verse so critically important.
Remember the claim at the beginning, that God is truly amazing, well this verse explains why. The living God is both faithful and righteous. Why are these important to you? Well, simply said, if you place your trust in Him and confess your sins then he proves to be faithful and righteous. Faithful indicates that He does what he says he is going to do. Therefore, when you confess sin and are in search of forgiveness, you know that God is going to forgive you because He said that He would. When you think about it, having access to a God who keeps His word and fulfills all of His promises is truly wonderful.
However, the scripture does not stop at saying He is faithful. It also says that He is righteous. Think about this for a moment, if you confess your sins to Him, doesn’t it seem a little strange at first that He would be described as righteous or just in response to that prayer of confession and forgiveness? It would be for anyone other than God Himself. Why? Think of a judge sitting in a courtroom. He is the only one who has the right, the authority and the position to issue a not guilty or guilty verdict. Because God is sovereign, He is the only one who has the position and authority to forgive you. Your best friend cannot forgive you for your sins, neither your parents or anyone else. The reason… you did not sin against them. When mankind sinned, when you sinned, it was against a holy and perfect God. Therefore, He is the only one who can and has the right to forgive us.
Now comes the faith. When you confess sin, when you seek forgiveness for your thoughts and actions, the only place you should go is before the throne of heaven and ask the one who is faithful and righteous to do so and trust that He is going to do what He said He would do. This may not always be easy, but it is worth it, so prayer for forgiveness to believe and take Him at His word.
Prayer for Forgiveness :
Holy God in Heaven, it is only by the grace and mercy of Christ on the cross that I can come before you and for this, I am thankful. I know that I have fallen short of your glorious standard in certain areas of my life and for these things I want to seek your forgiveness. Therefore, I confess to you at this moment (listing areas in which you have sinned) these items and call them for what they are… sin. I desire to have nothing hinder my relationship with you and to cause your Holy Spirit to grieve. As I pray for forgiveness in these areas of my life, I also believe, I wholeheartedly trust that you are faithful and just to forgive me of my sins. Because of this, because I know that you are a God who keeps His word and a God who has the authority to deal with my sin, that it is dealt with. I no longer have to carry this burden because you have cast this sin as far as the East is from the West. Thank you Lord for your forgiveness, thank your for your faithfulness and your righteousness. Help me to continually come before you seeking the forgiveness you freely offer. In Christ’s name I pray, AMEN.
